Client - Alan Saunders

The design was highly influenced by my cracking module modification from the Potentials submission. I took 2 key ideas from this which were the separation of spaces and section which I took from it.

From listening to a number of Alan Saunders’ Philosopher’s Zone broadcasts, I was able to gather that privacy was of importance to him. It was this and the Idea of separating spaces that evidently lead to the design of my floor plan and the different levels of elevation. The bedrooms, bathrooms and study were configured so that they had a view over the living areas as it provides a sense of security to know that you are surrounded by familiar spaces. The master bedroom is separated from the children’s and guests quarters so that it has the possibility to be shut off from the west of the house when not in use. Both the main bedroom and guest room have can also be used as retreats as a seat/sofa is included along the window and adjoining wall.
The westerly facing façade of the dwelling is designed to maximise the intrusion of natural light and views out to the ocean purposely removing non-oceanic views. The east façade of the house is very sterile as is meant to create a feeling of discomfort for any uninvited guests again using the idea of a sense of security.

A minor idea taken from my spiralling module was that of a space opening out over a view which is why the roof of the living and meals area has been pitched more than that of the other rooms.
